1a. Lennie was killed when he ran into the forest, by George. George believed that killing Lennie was the best reason because he knew that Curley and the other migrant workers would make Lennie suffer and die a harsh death. Lennie died while "daydreaming" about the American dream and his dream to tend the rabbits and he probably would've died a worse death at the hands of Curley, if George let him live. Even if George and Lennie ran away to another town, George knew that Lennie would probably get into trouble again, as he had in the previous towns, like Weed. Because of Lennie's foreseeable future, George felt that killing Lennie was the best option. We grew to know that George and Lennie's relationship was strong and I feel that George wouldn't have killed Lennie if it wasn't for Lennie's best interest.
1b.I believe that it was the best thing for George to kill Lennie. Lennie was certain to be killed by the migrant workers and Curley. Lennie died a somewhat peaceful death because he died while daydreaming about tending the rabbits. George made a promise to Candy that he wasn't going to let anyone hurt Lennie and by killing him himself, he prevented Lennie's painful death.
2a. Father In Italy Accused of Murder:
"Late last year, 67-year-old Beppino Englaro, won an intense 10-year legal battle to allow his daughter's feeding tubes to be removed, saying that was her wish. The court accepted that before the accident, his daughter had expressed a preference for dying over being kept alive artificially." This quote is explaining the motives that the father had for taking his daughter off of life support. The father's reason for taking his daughter off her feeding tubes was that she had talked about wanting to die rather than being kept alive with the help of machines, etc. The court agreed that this was an legitimate reason for taking her off of life support, and so it was done that she have her feeding tubes removed.
2b. "The court accepted that before the accident, his daughter had expressed a preference for dying over being kept alive artificially." This quote I believe shows that it was the best thing for the father to take his daughter off of life support. The daughter wanted to just die than be kept alive with machines, etc. I think that every person should have a right to their wish when placed in a situation, such as Eluana's. The father was fulfilling the wish of his daughter and giving her what she wanted.
Man Kills Family After Losing His Job
3a. I think that the father saw himself as a failure. He saw that he could not provide his family with the necessary items in life. He obviously saw no "bright light at the end of the tunnel" and I say this because I think he saw that his financial problems were only to worsen and that his current situation was not going to get better. "...my wife felt it better to end our lives and why leave our children in someone else's hands." This quote from the actual suicide note is telling us that he was encouraged by someone he loved, like his wife, that life was going to keep on being the way it was. "...knowing we have no job and 5 children under 8 years with no place to go." Another quote from the actual note states he and his wife saw that with no job, they would have no home, so killing themselves was the only way.
3b. With so many jobs being lost and so many material things out there for kids to want, a parent may feel that he or she is insufficient and they are depriving their children of things that they seem to "need." While material things may make a child feel loved and for the moment elated, there are other ways a parent can help a child succeed and not feel down without a high price tag.
- A child who feels loved will have more of a drive to succeed and not let life's curveballs bring them down. To make your child feel loved, ask them how they are doing and what they are feeling about. It doesn't even have to be about anything special. Just let them know that you are thinking about them. Talk to them about your own problems and help them understand that although you can't buy them material things, you still love them.
- Education is now an important component when getting a job. To help them succeed in school and go to college, get involved in their schoolwork and activities. If they have a sport event coming up, show up to cheer them on or if you can't make it, at least be interested about the game. If they seem lost in algebra equations or the structure of DNA, take them to tutoring or try to help them yourself.
- Teach your child to live without material things. There is a world outside of computers and big screen TVs. Introduce your child to this and plan a hiking trip or a simple picnic. Teach them to appreciate the clothes that they do have. You can tell them how to make a new outfit by mixing their clothes.
